Kathmandu — An emergency full meeting of the Supreme Court has decided to resume the registration of habeas corpus petitions and regular hearings starting Sunday, September 15 (Bhadra 29).

Issuing a statement on Thursday, the emergency full meeting announced that, in line with its decision, the registration of habeas corpus petitions and regular hearings would begin from Bhadra 29, and informed the general public accordingly.

The statement expressed heartfelt gratitude to judges, staff, legal professionals, law students, security personnel, and ordinary citizens who helped safeguard case files and physical resources of the court — public property — that were saved from arson and destruction. It also appealed for continued support in the days ahead.

Chief Justice Prakashman Singh Raut expressed deep sorrow over the damage caused by arson, stone pelting, vandalism, and looting that took place on September 9 (Bhadra 24) at the Supreme Court and other courts across the country.

He said the destructive attacks on courts — institutions that stand as the center of citizens’ trust — had inflicted unimaginable damage on vital documents, equipment, vehicles, and other resources, with much of Nepal’s important judicial history almost destroyed.

Despite such a grave situation, Chief Justice Raut reaffirmed his commitment to uphold sovereignty, constitutionalism, the rule of law, protection of fundamental rights, and citizens’ unshakable right to justice, pledging that the courts would resume operations as soon as possible with firmness and determination.
