Kathmandu — The Joint Student Organization staged a protest on Saturday in front of the Indian Embassy in Lainchaur, opposing what it called Indian and Chinese interventionist conspiracies to turn Lipulekh into a trade route through encroachment.
The demonstrators demanded an immediate end to interference in Nepal’s territory.
Addressing the protest, Birendra Shah, Chairman of the All Nepal National Independent Students’ Union (Revolutionary), said that although the government repeatedly speaks of pursuing diplomatic initiatives, it has failed to take concrete steps.
He emphasized that the government must take the issue seriously and bring it into national discussion. Referring to Lipulekh, he noted that even though secretary-level committees had been formed multiple times, India eventually withdrew from the discussions.
“Our government keeps saying it will pursue diplomatic efforts, but it only talks and does not act. First, the government must become serious and make this a subject of discussion. India has not even wanted to hold talks on this matter. Several secretary-level committees were formed on Lipulekh, but in the end India withdrew,” Shah said.
He further argued that even if India were to agree to talks, Nepal has ample evidence to support its claims. According to him, the issue should not remain confined to bilateral discussions but should be internationalized and taken to the International Court of Justice to defend Nepal’s border.
Protesters carried placards bearing slogans such as “Defend national sovereignty,” “Lipulekh is ours,” “Stop interference in Nepali territory,” “Indian Army out of Kalapani,” “Vacate Kalapani,” and “Immediately revoke the decision to encroach on Nepali land.”
