Kathmandu — Lawmakers of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) have announced their collective resignation.

Issuing a statement on Tuesday, they said they resigned in protest against the government’s suppression of peaceful demonstrations organized by the Gen Z movement, which they claimed had taken the lives of dozens of youths.

Declaring that the current government has completely lost its legitimacy, the RSP lawmakers demanded the immediate resignation of the Prime Minister; formation of a high-level judicial commission to investigate the incidents impartially; creation of an all-party citizens’ government; and dismissal and detention of the Prime Minister, the Home Minister, the Minister for Communications, as well as the Chief District Officer of Kathmandu, along with strict action against all those responsible.

The statement, signed by acting parliamentary party chair and former leader Dol Prasad Aryal, included the names of party president Rabi Lamichhane, deputy leader Biraj Bhakta Shrestha, Dr. Swarnim Wagle, Dr. Toshima Karki, Shishir Khanal, Sumana Shrestha, Sobita Gautam, among others.

Concluding that the present Federal Parliament has lost legitimacy by failing to resolve any national issues, the lawmakers proposed the urgent formation of an interim citizens’ government as a way forward. They also expressed heartfelt condolences to the Gen Z “fighters” killed by the government’s actions, pledged full support to provide immediate and free treatment to the injured, and reaffirmed their commitment to continue the struggle in line with the demands and aspirations of Gen Z.
