Kathmandu — Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak has announced that the law will be amended and revised to recognize polygamy.

Speaking to the media after Tuesday’s Cabinet Bill Committee meeting, Lekhak said that laws will be framed in the interest of the nation and its citizens, urging people not to worry about the possibility of negative elements entering the law.

He stated, “There has been concern and public discourse among citizens regarding this matter. The committee will address all these concerns and amend the law accordingly. We have made this decision today. We will revise it and ensure it serves the interest of the country and its people. So, I request you not to assume that negative provisions will be included in the law.”

He also informed that the meeting proposed amendments to five major legal codes: the Criminal Code (Muluki Aparadh Sanhita), Criminal Procedure Code (Muluki Faujdari Karyabidhi Sanhita), Civil Code (Muluki Dewani Sanhita), Civil Procedure Code (Muluki Dewani Karyabidhi Sanhita), and the Sentencing Law.

He noted that provisions related to polygamy, minimum age for marriage, pretrial bail, and remission or alteration of imprisonment and fines need further discussion and amendment. Therefore, a subcommittee has been formed under the Bill Committee.

According to him, the subcommittee will also gather opinions and suggestions from the relevant ministries and conduct further necessary discussions before drafting the revised bill.
