Kathmandu: Grandi International Hospital in Nepal has achieved a historic milestone in stroke treatment services. The hospital has been officially recognized as an “Advanced Stroke Center” by the World Stroke Organization (WSO), becoming the first hospital in Nepal to receive this accreditation.

The WSO granted this recognition on October 17, following a rigorous evaluation of the hospital’s quality, infrastructure, medical services, treatment protocols, and outcomes.

At a press conference organized by the hospital, Dr. Raju Paudel, neurologist and director of the Stroke Program, stated:

"This recognition is a testament to our unwavering commitment to providing world-class services to the Nepali people."

To achieve this milestone, the hospital has formed a multidisciplinary team of stroke specialists, including neurologists, neurosurgeons, interventional radiologists, emergency physicians, ICU nurses, physiotherapists, and speech therapists, among others.

The hospital also highlighted the use of advanced neuroimaging technologies, thrombolytic therapy, and thrombectomy procedures, which have significantly improved the quality of stroke care.

The evaluation and certification process at Grandi Hospital was led by Dr. Deirdre D’Silva, Secretary General of WSO (Singapore), and Global Certification Lead Rupali Sedani. The certificate was presented by WSO President Dr. Jayaraj D. Pandian, outgoing President Dr. Sheila Martins, and Treasurer Dr. Valeria Caso.

Dr. Subash Phuyal, neuro-interventional radiologist, emphasized the critical importance of time in stroke treatment, stating:

"Procedures such as thrombectomy for major arterial blockages can significantly reduce the gap between life and death."

He added that the hospital has been implementing complex neuro-interventional procedures, including coiling, saccular diversion, carotid stenting, flow diversion, and arteriovenous malformation interventions.

Dr. Vinod Vijukche, Medical Director of Grandi Hospital, affirmed the hospital’s commitment to providing international-level neurological care, stating:

"We are continuously striving for excellence. Grandi will meet global standards in stroke treatment."

In Nepal, statistics show that one person suffers a stroke every 10 minutes, highlighting the growing need for advanced stroke care. In this context, Grandi Hospital’s achievement represents a milestone for Nepal’s healthcare sector.
